Oscars 2026: Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound With Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa & Janhvi Kapoor Named India’s Official Entry

India has officially chosen its cinematic torchbearer for the 98th Academy Awards. Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound, starring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor, has been selected as India’s official entry to the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars 2026. The announcement was made on September 19 in Kolkata by filmmaker N Chandra, chairing the 12-member selection committee.

Why Homebound Was Selected

Speaking at a press conference, N Chandra revealed that 24 films across languages were considered before the committee finalized Homebound. “It was a very difficult choice. These were films that touched the lives of people,” he said. The panel, which included producers, directors, writers, editors, and journalists, praised the film for its human depth and social relevance.

Homebound tells the story of two childhood friends from a small North Indian village who dream of becoming police officers. While chasing dignity and respect, the harsh realities of life strain their bond, turning friendship into conflict. Its emotional core and relatable storytelling made it a unanimous choice to represent India on cinema’s biggest global stage.

Global Recognition and Film Festival Triumphs

Before the Oscars announcement, Homebound had already created waves at major international festivals. At the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2025, the film emerged as the second runner-up for the People’s Choice International Award, standing tall alongside global hits like No Other Choice and Sentimental Value.

Earlier this year, the film received a nine-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival 2025, where it was showcased under the prestigious Un Certain Regard section. Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese personally endorsed the film, calling it “a beautifully crafted work and a significant contribution to Indian cinema.” Such acclaim has amplified anticipation for the Oscars run.

Director Neeraj Ghaywan on Homebound

Best known for his critically acclaimed debut Masaan (2015), Neeraj Ghaywan described Homebound as “a deeply personal story about friendship, dignity, and survival.” Speaking at TIFF, he said,

“It’s about people who are often unseen, and the quiet strength they carry in a world that rarely pauses for them. I hope the film helps us look closer—with empathy—and see what we’ve been conditioned to ignore.”

His words reflect the intimate yet universal appeal of Homebound, making it the kind of cinema that resonates across borders.

Bollywood’s Emotional Connect

Producer Karan Johar, who has backed the film, expressed his joy on Instagram after its TIFF success. He wrote:

“Homebound is a story we are all so proud of. To see it being loved across the globe—beyond language or barriers—is surreal! This is only the beginning.”

With stars like Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor at the forefront, Homebound also bridges art-house credibility with mainstream visibility, an essential factor for global recognition.
