India has officially chosen its cinematic torchbearer for the 98th Academy Awards. Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound, starring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor, has been selected as India’s official entry to the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars 2026. Speaking at a press conference, N Chandra revealed that 24 films across languages were considered before the committee finalized Homebound. “It was a very difficult choice. Homebound tells the story of two childhood friends from a small North Indian village who dream of becoming police officers. Earlier this year, the film received a nine-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival 2025, where it was showcased under the prestigious Un Certain Regard section. Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese personally endorsed the film, calling it “a beautifully crafted work and a significant contribution to Indian cinema.” Such acclaim has amplified anticipation for the Oscars run.
