Ranveer Singh Apologizes After Backlash Over ‘Kantara’ Mimicry at IFFI 2025

Actor Ranveer Singh has issued a public apology following intense backlash for his mimicry of Rishab Shetty’s Kantara performance at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025. The incident, which sparked a debate on cultural sensitivity, involved Singh referring to the sacred Daiva as a “female ghost.”

The Incident: What Happened at IFFI?

The controversy erupted during the closing ceremony of the 56th IFFI in Goa. Ranveer Singh, who was on stage, decided to pay tribute to the massive success of the Kannada film Kantara: Chapter 1.

While addressing Rishab Shetty, who was seated in the audience, Ranveer praised his acting but made a comment that did not sit well with many. He reportedly said:

“I watched Kantara Chapter 1… outstanding performance, especially when the female ghost enters your body.”

He then proceeded to mimic the intense “Daiva possession” sequence from the film, complete with exaggerated expressions and sticking his tongue out. While the intent appeared to be admiration, the execution was widely perceived as mocking a deeply revered tradition.

The Backlash: “Deity, Not Ghost”

Social media users and cultural advocates were quick to call out the actor. The primary criticism stemmed from two points:

  1. Cultural Ignorance: Referring to the Panjurli Daiva or Guliga Daiva (sacred spirit deities worshipped in the Tulu Nadu region) as a “ghost” was seen as offensive and factually incorrect.
  2. Disrespectful Mimicry: Many felt that mimicking a sacred ritual on a glitzy stage for entertainment trivialized the spiritual significance of Bhootakola.

The backlash intensified with the hashtag #BoycottDhurandhar trending on social media, threatening the prospects of Ranveer’s upcoming film, Dhurandhar, which is slated for release this Friday. Reports also emerged that a police complaint was filed against the actor by a Hindu outfit in Goa for hurting religious sentiments.

Ranveer Singh’s Apology

Responding to the growing outrage, Ranveer Singh took to Instagram Stories on Tuesday morning to clarify his stance and offer an unconditional apology.

His Statement:

“My intention was to highlight Rishab’s incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration.”

He further added:

“I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”

Rishab Shetty’s Reaction

While Rishab Shetty was seen smiling in some viral clips during the act, reports suggest a more nuanced reaction. Sources claim that Rishab politely signaled Ranveer to stop the mimicry during the event, though he did not escalate the matter publicly. The Kantara star has maintained that the Daiva tradition is not merely a performance but a way of life for the people of coastal Karnataka.

What’s Next?

The apology comes at a crucial time for Ranveer Singh, just days before the release of his big-budget action film Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar. Industry insiders believe the quick apology was a necessary move to prevent the controversy from overshadowing the film’s release.

The incident serves as a reminder of the thin line between appreciation and appropriation, especially when dealing with cinema rooted in specific, sacred cultural traditions.
