In a groundbreaking initiative to address mental health challenges and student suicides, AIIMS Delhi has launched an innovative AI-based program called “Never Alone”. Unveiled on World Suicide Prevention Day, the initiative aims to provide students with round-the-clock access to mental health support through a user-friendly app, offering both virtual and offline consultations with trained mental health experts.
Combating Student Suicides with AI
India faces a growing mental health crisis, particularly among young adults aged 18–30. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), over 1.7 lakh people died by suicide in 2022, with students and young adults contributing significantly to this alarming statistic.
Dr. Nand Kumar, Professor of Psychiatry at AIIMS Delhi, emphasized that the program aims to minimize the stigma surrounding suicide, increase awareness among students, and provide timely intervention before mental health challenges escalate. He believes that AI technology can bridge the gap between students and mental health professionals, making support accessible and stigma-free.
How ‘Never Alone’ Works
The “Never Alone” program is powered by artificial intelligence, which allows it to offer personalized and secure mental health screening. Students can access the platform via WhatsApp or a web-based app, ensuring ease of use and convenience.
For institutions with 5,000 students, the program costs just 70 paise per student per day, making it both scalable and affordable. The AI system continuously monitors student responses, identifies early warning signs, and connects them with mental health experts for counseling.
This seamless combination of AI technology and professional support ensures students receive timely assistance, whether they are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, or other mental health challenges.

Why This Program is a Game-Changer
“Never Alone” is not just another mental health initiative—it represents a technological and social breakthrough in tackling mental health stigma in India. By providing 24/7 support, students no longer have to wait for office hours or struggle to access help.
The program also addresses institutional mental health gaps, enabling colleges and universities to proactively monitor student well-being and intervene early. This proactive approach has the potential to save countless lives while fostering a culture of mental wellness and empathy.
The Role of AI in Mental Health
Artificial intelligence is transforming the way we approach mental health. Programs like “Never Alone” leverage AI to:
- Analyze student responses and detect early signs of mental distress.
- Provide personalized recommendations for counseling or therapeutic interventions.
- Ensure privacy and confidentiality, reducing the fear of judgment or stigma.
- Enable mental health professionals to focus on high-priority cases, optimizing care.
AI-driven mental health solutions are particularly effective in countries like India, where access to mental health professionals is limited, and stigma prevents many from seeking help.
Future Outlook
With initiatives like “Never Alone,” AIIMS Delhi is setting a benchmark for technology-driven mental health solutions in India. The program has the potential to expand to more institutions, reaching thousands of students across the country and reducing mental health disparities.Experts hope that combining AI technology, expert counseling, and awareness campaigns will create a safer, more supportive environment for young adults, ensuring that no student feels isolated or helpless in times of crisis.
